National Museum of Italian American History Commission Act
Our organization has joined forces with other Italian American organizations and Congressman Tom Suozzi to introduce a groundbreaking bill aimed at establishing a Smithsonian Museum of Italian American History. This initiative draws inspiration from successful legislative commissions that have led to the creation of prominent Smithsonian museums, such as the National Museum of African American History and Culture, as well as the Asian Pacific American History and Culture Museum.
Italian Americans have made significant contributions to the United States, excelling in various fields, including business, public service, law, and the arts. From Fortune 500 CEOs and public servants to Supreme Court justices and Nobel Prize laureates, the Italian American narrative is a vital part of the American story—one of immigrants embracing family values, community commitment, public service, patriotism, and the pursuit of a brighter future.
The proposed legislation would establish a planning commission made up of experts in museum development and the immigrant experience in America. This commission would assess the feasibility of creating, maintaining, funding, and operating a museum dedicated to Italian American history as part of the Smithsonian Institution.
